Vintage Bombshells

Top 9 Vintage Bombshells

We’ve been hearing too much about bombs and not enough about bombshells- a way sexier topic. A bombshell is above all feminine, sexy and drop dead gorgeous. She wears her confidence on her sleeve and is not one to be messed with. She enjoys causing an uproar but when it comes down to it, she will be the one to make things happen. We round up ten of our favourite vintage bombshells.

Marilyn Monroe

You can’t utter the word bombshell without giving Norma Jeane more than a gracious nod. Marilyn Monroe was a carefully curated combination of sex appeal, childlike innocence and a damsel in distress character. Though not necessarily remembered for her acting chops, Marilyn Monroe was one the most famous women in the world. She was celebrated for her iconic one-liners, rumoured love affairs and iconic images. It was a tragedy and shock to lose such a beautiful woman at such an early age.

Jayne Mansfield

One of Hollywood’s hottest sex symbols, Jayne Mansfield was known as Marilyn Monroe’s rival and for good reason. She was brazen, bold and incredibly sexy. Jayne was a self-proclaimed pin-up girl and was famous for her curvaceous silhouette and acting and singing skills. Mansfield was one of the first Playboy Playmates and enjoyed success in major movies like The Wayward Bus (1957) and Too Hot to Handle (1960).

Elizabeth Taylor

Elizabeth Taylor was not only an outstanding actress but also a tabloid favourite. Before she was known for her multiple marriages and insatiability for diamonds, she was known for her hourglass figure and violet eyes. By the time she was cast in A Place In The Sun (1951), she was a Hollywood star and known worldwide. She even became the highest paid actress in 1960 when she was paid a million dollars to play Cleopatra. She was beautiful, passionate and outspoken, three things we love in a woman.

Sophia Loren

Still considered to be one of Italy’s and the world’s most beautiful women Sophia Loren was the brunette version of the blond bombshell. When someone attributes their killer curves to pasta, how can we not be fans? Born in Rome, she crossed over to the US in 1957 and has been acting ever since. Less than a decade ago in 2007, Loren posed for the Pirelli calendar wearing only lingerie, at the ripe old age of 72! Saluti Sophia!

Eartha Kitt

Best known for her role as Catwoman in the ‘60s TV Show Batman, Earth Kitt is sultry, sexy and has a voice like an angel. She sang hit songs like Uska Dara, I Want to be Evil and C’est Si Bon. She worked in television, movies, broadway and nightclubs and was an outspoken opponent of the Vietnam War.

Brigitte Bardot

A bohemian bombshell, Brigitte Bardot was a model, singer and actress who was known for her sense of fashion as much as she was for her signature golden locks. The ultimate sex kitten, Bardot was curvaceous, vivacious and she knew it. The scene of her dancing barefoot on a table in the movie …And God Created Women (1956) is one of the most sensual scenes in cinema.

Jean Harlow

One of the original sex symbols, Jean Harlow wasn’t very well known till her breakout role in Hell’s Angels (1930). Nicknamed the ‘Blond Bombshell’ it was her platinum locks that inspired women around the country to pick up the hydrogen peroxide and go platinum blond. She was a rival and precursor to Marilyn Monroe though died at the tender age of 26.

Raquel Welch

Who can forget Raquel Welch in the poster for the 1966 film One Million Years B.C? With less than five lines in the movie, Welch still somehow emerged as the star. She was named Playboy’s Most Desirable Woman in 1970. Welch broke the mould of the submissive, soft-spoken sex symbol and was confident and strong.

Josephine Baker

Josephine Baker was known best for her erotic dance performances where she wore nearly nothing such as her iconic banana laden costume for Danse Banane (1927).  She also served as an informant during WWII and fought for segregation in the states. Baker was the first African-American woman to be cast in a major movie and apart from being one of the sexiest woman in the world, she worked hard to defend a great cause.
