Lingerie in Fashion: 2016 so far

Lingerie traditionally goes under your clothes; however, since as far back as we can remember, we’ve seen lingerie play centre stage when it comes to mainstream fashion. Anyone remember Madonna’s iconic cone bra worn during her Blonde Ambition tour?

From the more literal adaptations to slight hints of lace and silk, lingerie inspired fashion has become a staple on and off the red carpet. We wanted to give you some great examples from the past couple of months of how you too can add a touch of femininity and sensuality to any outfit. Here are some of our favourite lingerie inspired fashion looks so far.

Calvin Klein Spring-Summer 2016

Calvin Klein, the king of American simplicity and modern elegance reimagined the humble slip at New York Fashion Week this February. Calvin gave the audience classic slip dresses in satin and silk that oozed sensuality while hiding all the models curves (if such a thing exists!) in true Americana style. Classic lines and monochromatic designs showed that slips don’t belong under the dress, they are the dress!

Givenchy Spring 2016: New York Fashion Week

Trust the Kardashian’s go to designer, Riccardo Tisci to turn up the heat at Givenchy with super luxe, lace embellished gowns that we think are the perfect example of bedroom chic. With dresses layered under silk robes, the only thing missing was a pair of plush bathroom slippers.

Romona Keveža

We’ve seen the bralet trend come and go with over-emphasized chests making their comeback every award season. At the Grammys this year, the pint sized Ariana Grande made fashion waves with this sizzling red Romona Keveža dress with a corset top with button details. The fluted skirt added the right amount of elegance without taking away from the daring bodice.

Alexandre Vauthier

We aren’t sure if this counts as lingerie inspired fashion or fashion inspired lingerie but what we do know is that Ciara scorched the red carpet and blinded the paparazzi in this Alexandre Vauthier backless wrap dress with a higher than thigh high slit.

Romona Keveža

The SAG Awards saw a more grown up version of Modern Family’s Ariel Winter in a body hugging, black corset gown by celebrity favourite Romona Keveža. In June of last year, the starlet underwent a breast reduction surgery to decrease her size from a 32F to a 34D. Social media was aflutter with news of the surgery along with pictures of her scars, which are fully visible in this stunning gown and have done nothing to slow down the gorgeous actress.

Reem Acra

Red carpet favourite Reem Acra created a collection for fall/winter 2016 that was ethereal, embellished and enchanting. With lingerie inspired details such as lace fabric, barely there dresses, and corset bodices, Acra’s vision of a ‘femme fatale’ truly came to life with exquisite bedroom to red carpet looks that we can’t stop drooling over.

Alexander McQueen

Hot off the runway at London Fashion Week, Sara Burton for Alexander McQueen upheld McQueen’s rock n’ roll sensibility and teamed this up with delicate influences. Negligee inspired dresses, peekaboo bras under heavy coats and corsets atop whimsical chiffon dresses gave us some of our favourite Designer lingerie-inspired styles.

Though it may seem like lingerie inspired fashion only has a place for itself on the red carpet, using subtle hints and small details can always add a touch of feminine mystique to any outfit. Whether it’s incorporating a corset top or a sheer fabric to your ensemble, there’s always an excuse to spice things up!
