Feminism 101

As a follow up to our Women’s Day post where we asked friends from around the world about their perceptions of the word ‘feminism’, we decided to do a little research and give our readers and quick intro to feminism, or Feminism 101 if you will. Feminism, as the word suggests, focuses on women. The political, ideological and social movements that share a common goal: to establish and achieve equal rights for women in every realm. This includes social, economic, cultural, political and personal. Feminists are advocates or supporters for these equal rights. When you say equal rights, you might wonder equal to what? Well, most sources won’t explicitly state this but they essentially mean men’s rights. Men’s rights are taken as the benchmark for the rights women want available to them.

Many people see feminism as an extreme movement where ‘man-haters’ go around burning bras and not shaving their underarms, however, we think it goes a little bit deeper than that. When you look at the achievements that feminists have made in the past such as the right to vote, reproductive rights, and the right to own property; these seem pretty obvious in today’s day and age however these were achieved by the perseverance of feminists who believed that women deserve everything that men have and more. Although it seems that feminism is based around the virtue of one being a woman, many feminists argue for the inclusion of men and their liberation from traditional gender roles as well.

As Emma Watson rightly stated in her speech, “Men—I would like to take this opportunity to extend your formal invitation. Gender equality is your issue too.” This links to her comment that, “We don’t often talk about men being imprisoned by gender stereotypes but I can see that that they are and that when they are free, things will change for women as a natural consequence”. It isn’t men or women who are the problem but the traditional gender roles and stereotypes that men and women continue to live under, live by, and propagate.

The take away messages are key. Around the world, women are still getting paid less than men for the same work, they are being promoted fewer times than their male counterparts at the office, they are being forced into marriages and facing domestic abuse, while also being more adversely affected by poverty and natural disasters than men.
